Yayasan Ulin (Ironwood Foundation) is a non profit organization set up by the senior management of PT REA Kaltim Plantations. It was founded in April 2009, with basic goal to build structures and supports in order to face the challenges in the forest and wetland conservation of mixed use landscapes of Kalimantan (Indonesian Borneo) outside the Totally Protected Areas (TPA).
Mixed use landscapes by definition contain a wide variety of habitats as a result of differing development regimes : subsistence farms, large plantations, forestry/ agroforestry projects, subsistence fishermen, commercial fish farming, industrial development and a plethora of other uses.
The primary purpose of the Yayasan Ulin is to mprove the structure design, management and conservation value of landscape-level habitat mosaics of original biodiversity.
In short, it promotes biodiversity through :
-Design and Management of conservation reverses
-Species protection and sustainable use
-Technical support and community based management (education, training, socio-economic benefits from sustainable use)
Currently the activities of the foundation are focused in the Province of East Kalimantan, Indonesia on the island of Borneo. Agencies with which the initiatives will cooperate include provincial authorities involved in Forestry, Resource Conservation, Fisheries and Agriculture.
